Number porting, keep the number customers know

Your phone number is printed on your website, your vans, your invoices and in the contacts of every customer. Changing phone systems should not mean changing it. Youvoip number porting moves your existing local and toll-free numbers from your current carrier to Youvoip at no charge, on every plan, and your team can start using the new phone system before the port is finished.

How to port a phone number to Youvoip

Porting is a request from Youvoip to your current carrier to hand over the number. You start it in the admin console and the console tracks each step.

  • Add the numbers you want to keep and the account details from your current carrier.
  • Upload a recent bill and sign the letter of authorization in the console.
  • Your current carrier approves the request and confirms a date.
  • On the scheduled date, calls to your number start ringing in Youvoip.
  • Cancel the old service only after the port is live.

For a step by step checklist, read how to port a business phone number.

Port your phone number without downtime

While the port is in progress, your old line keeps working. Youvoip gives you a temporary number from the first day, so you can build the auto attendant and routing, invite your team and install the apps. On the scheduled day, the number moves over and calls arrive in the call flow you already tested.

What you need to port a number

Most rejected port requests fail on details. Have these ready before you start: the account number and PIN or passcode from your current carrier, the name and service address exactly as they appear on the bill, and the full list of numbers on the account, including fax lines and extra numbers you want to keep. Do not cancel the old account first, because a cancelled number can no longer be ported. If the carrier rejects the request, the console shows the reason so you can correct the detail and submit again.

Porting local and toll-free numbers together

You can port local numbers and toll-free numbers in the same request or in separate ones. Businesses moving several locations can port each site's numbers on its own schedule, and multi-site on Ultimate keeps local numbers per site with site-level admins. On Enterprise, a named account manager and a migration plan cover larger moves, and SIP trunking can connect an existing PBX while numbers move in stages.
