Toll free numbers for business
A toll free number tells callers two things: the call costs them nothing, and the business behind it serves more than one town. Youvoip gives you toll-free numbers with 800, 888, 877 and the other toll-free prefixes, and connects them to the same auto attendant, call routing, voicemail to email and recording as every other number in your account. Minutes are pooled across the team, so nobody runs out alone.
What is a toll free number
A toll-free number is a phone number where the business, not the caller, pays for the call. In the US and Canada these numbers start with 800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877 or 888, and they work the same way no matter which prefix you choose. Callers dial them from mobiles and landlines anywhere in the country. For a business, the toll-free number is usually the main customer line, the support line or the number printed on packaging and ads.
A toll free business phone number that rings everywhere
A toll-free number in Youvoip is a virtual number, so it is not tied to a desk or a location. Point it at the auto attendant for a menu, at a ring group for a team, at a single person or at a call queue on Business. Staff answer on the mobile app, the desktop app, the web softphone or a SIP desk phone. When the office internet is down, calls fail over to forwarding to mobile numbers or voicemail.
- Choose from available numbers with the prefix you prefer.
- Use it as caller ID for outbound calls, so customers recognize callbacks.
- Send callers to different teams by time of day with business hours and holiday schedules.
- Record calls and see missed calls in the call log.
Toll-free minutes, pooled across the account
Inbound toll-free calls use pooled minutes shared by the whole account: 100 per user on Essentials, 500 per user on Business and 1 000 per user on Ultimate. A team of ten on Business shares a pool of 5 000 minutes, so a busy support line draws on minutes that quieter seats do not use. Enterprise has custom limits.
Toll free number provider change without losing the number
Already have a toll-free number with another provider? Number porting moves it to Youvoip at no charge, and your existing service keeps answering until the port completes. Our guide on how to port a business phone number lists what to prepare, such as the latest bill and the account details from your current provider.

Put the number to work
A toll-free number is only as good as what happens after the caller dials. The IVR system greets and sorts callers, call routing software finds a free agent, call recording software keeps the conversation and call analytics software shows wait times and missed calls. Support teams handling many calls at once should also see VoIP call center solutions. If you need a local number too, see virtual phone number.

Toll free number questions
Is there a difference between 800, 888 and 877 numbers?
No functional difference. All toll-free prefixes work the same way and are free for the caller. 800 numbers are the oldest and most familiar, so fewer of them are available.
Can a toll-free number be my only business number?
Yes. On every plan each user can take a local or a toll-free number, and you can point it at the auto attendant as your main line.
Can outbound calls show the toll-free number?
Yes. Set the toll-free number as caller ID for a person or a team, and customers see it when you call them back.
Can I text from a toll-free number?
Business texting from company numbers is included on Business and Ultimate.
